My Spoonflower Design Challenge Results

So in the interests of honesty and sharing, here are my top 5 and bottom 5 design challenge entries. With the exception of 5, including the very first as a rather disappointed me deleted them long ago. I have never placed in the top 10 but am proud to have made to top 100 four times...so far!

I have a total of 61 design challenge entries over the last three years. So I feel another spreadsheet coming on! The simplest way to decide the rankings would be placings, but I don't think getting 50th out of 100 designs is quite the same as getting 50th out of 1000. So, I will have to crack out the math and give each design a ranking. Luckily as much as I love surface design, I also LOVE math! I have not used the vote counts to decide rankings and I will follow up with a post with a full table of all results. Let's get straight into it!

Top 5 Design Placings

Why not start with what I am proud of right? At least those who don't make it to the end won't see the worst performers first.

1st Place - Serene Soft Green Cream Wave Swirls - 27th of 1298

Serene Soft Green Cream Wave Swirls Bedding

With my highest ever placing of 27th out of 1298 entries, Serene Soft Green Cream Wave Swirls design came out on top.

2nd Place - Croissant Soft Textured Medium - 29th of 1299

Croissant Soft Textured Medium Wallpaper
The yummy croissants, one of my absolute favourite foods, received 29th out of 1299 entries. This design did particularly well in wallpaper sales. Not necessarily all this size, as it is available in three sizes.

3rd Place - Kiwi Honeycomb Block Print Dark Blue - 69th of 1326

I love the block print style and being able to bring in a New Zealand aspect with our cute little kiwi. This design placed 69th out of 1326 entries.

4th Place - Textured Party Streamers Bright Orange, Pink & Blue - 77th of 1459

Textured Party Streamers Bright Orange, Pink & Blue

I loved how these party streamers turned out so much, I made them in several more colour palettes. This is the original entry that placed 77th out of 1459 entries.

5th Place - Dutch tulips on a muted blue - 109th of 1379

These sweet simple tulips surprised me, placing 109th out of 1379 entries. They have become my top selling design over all and even though the design was from December 2023 they still pop up in sales now.

Bottom 5 Design Placings

Now on to the not so popular list. Although, even though they were not favoured, some of these designs have still made sales. So another reason why joining in with the design challenge is very worthwhile.

57th Place - Preppy Bouquet in Peachy (S) - 781st of 1405

Preppy Bouquet in Peachy (S) Napkin
Personally I still love these little preppy bouquets, they placed 781st out of 1405. But I can see that they are very soft coloured and may need a little more contrast to stand out more.

58th Place - Confetti Big 2025 Calendar Muted Pink Green Light - 539th of 917

I have never had a great deal of success with tea towel or wall hanging challenges. I'm not sure if it is just me but I prefer a design that can be used on many different items. This 2025 Calendar placed 539 out of 917. Maybe judging by the lower number of entries I am not alone!

59th Place - Bold Floral in Red Medium - 1291st of 2094

Bold Floral in Red Medium Pillow
Honestly, this one surprised me a little. I think the flowers could've been more flowing, and maybe more colours would have been better. Coming in 1291st out of 2094,

60th Place - Hexagon Moss Mosaic Tiles - 743rd of 1145

Hexagon Moss Mosaic Tiles
I don't have strong feelings about this one. I like it but it isn't anything special. So probably deserves the 743rd out of 1145 that is received.

61st Place - Groovy Tunes Vinyl Record Swirls

Groovy Tunes Vinyl Record Swirls Placemats
Bringing up the rear, Groovy Tunes Vinyl Record Swirls goes way back to 2022. When I was just getting brave enough to enter the design challenges and testing out all the Procreate features on my iPad. It placed 511th out of 717. Surprisingly it has made a sale!

This has been a great little adventure looking through all the past challenges. Next week I will share the full results table and whether Spoonflower Design Challenges are worth it!

Welcome to my Spoonflower Journey

Welcome! I am starting this blog to share my journey into surface design in April of 2022, predominantly focusing on Spoonflower. I had so many questions when I first started that I struggled to find answers for. The most pressing question was, does anyone actually make any money selling designs on Spoonflower? So in the interests of transparency and sharing information I am planning to document how my earnings are progressing (slowly!) since my start in Spoonflower.

Does Anyone Make Money on Spoonflower?

Does anyone actually make any money on Spoonflower? That was my biggest question when I first started. Not surprisingly, I couldn't really find an answer. There are so many variables but I would still like to see how others are doing, so maybe you are interested too! I started my Spoonflower journey in April 2022, so bang on 3 years ago now. So, I'll break down how my sales progressed over the last three years. Let's go year by year and see how it panned out! All numbers will be in US dollars as that is how Spoonflower pays me. Sorry Kiwi's but having to convert it all will be a pain! Sales in 2022 My first sale came on June 27th a whopping $1.10 for a fat quarter of 'Juicy Bright Orange Slices'. It was my only sale in June...but to have a sale in 3 months seemed like a huge win. Especially when others online had not made their first sale in much longer or even at all. So don't get discouraged! And so this post doesn't drag on for ages...here is the rest...
